Charcoal, revisited

It's been almost 6 months since I used one of my favorite mediums, charcoal. So I felt it was high time to get back into the swing of things. This time, I even had a nice pad of charcoal paper to boot. So I skipped class (shhhhh), headed over to Starbucks, grabbed a venti White Hot Chocolate (delish) and drew a picture that I've been meaning to draw for a while. My Girl. It didn't come out perfect, but I think its damn good.

This was my final project for Illustrator class. It's a Powerbook done in (duh) Adobe Illustrator.
By the way, I'm contemplating a site redesign. Hopefully with more frequent updates as well. I wouldn't hold your breath, though.

Golly, it's been a while. And the worst part is that my Drawing class is almost over. On top of that, all I've got next term are Gen Ed classes. >:^P But I'll make the best of it and try to keep drawing when ever I can. And since it's been so long I figured I might as well give you guys 2 for the price of one.

This is just some guy from one of my many drawing books. I liked the use of dramatic lighting in it. It translated well to charcoal.

Ahhh, Bruce. Need I say more. The picture I was working from wasn't the greatest, but I managed to pull off a decent sketch. I think I need to use paper with a better tooth for charcoal though.

This was a still life I did in class a couple of weeks ago. Again, it's charcoal, but this time instead of in my sketchbook, its on a large newsprint pad. Hence the low quality of the image, I had to take a photo of it, instead of scanning it like I normally do. I thought it came out pretty darned good, if I do say so myself. And of course, frickin' clickin' makes it bigger.

Here's another charcoal rendering I did. This one was off the top of my head. I had actually drew a similar pose on a Post-it note. I liked how the rough little ball point sketch came out, so I thought I'd take a shot at nicely shaded version. Sure the proportions are greatly exaggerated, but realism of the female figure wasn't what I was going for. Cool shading was. Maybe I'll try a woman with a face and some nipples down the road.

So I've decided to relaunch this site and I'm doing it with this cool eyeball that I drew for my Basic Drawing class. I'm really starting to get into using charcoal, it really lends itself to some good shading. So needless to say, I think you can expect lots of charcoal work coming up in the near future. I might even try to get back into the chalk pastels. I used to use them a lot in my teenage years, only I don't think I was using them quite to the extent of their capabilities. Anyhow, I'm getting ahead of myself. Hope you enjoy the eye. BTW, clicking makes it bigger.

Getting Personal

I think I'm going to switch this here community webfolio to being my own personal sketch-blog. Not that I don't like the feeling of community, its just that everyone seems to have started their own blogs for such things that they might have used delineature for. So as of now I'm temporarily shutting it down with the hopes of a redesign and a rebirth to my own personal gallery.

Finally, here's something awful. Two quicker-than-I-would-have-liked
sketches of our lovely, unwitting participants in this round of
Inspiration Illustrated. I did one in the non-photo blue pencil as
well, but found when I tried to scan it that they're quite serious
about that whole non-photo thing. There's a multitude of wrong here
and every time I look at someone elses sketch book, I get angry and
jealous as if I have anyone to blame but me for my lack of prowess.
This is the part where I shut up. Enjoy as best you can.

I like where this was going until I made her right hand. Oh Well... I still like it. If you guys know Tank Girl usually she has a Mohawk, holding gun, and has missiles for breasts. I guess this would be the PG-13 version.

This is part of what was keeping me from II vol. 1. We had to design playing cards using line as a value and they had to have a theme. I chose Popeye. I like Popeye. I think that should be fairly obvious by now.

I surfed over from Jim's blog and I thought this was cool exercise. So I figured I would send my 2 cents in.

The sketch was just pencil to paper. Then I brought it into Photoshop to colorized it. I like them both for different reasons hence why I sent them both. You can chose one or both if you deem worthy.

To answer Gino I figured it might be good to post this. I’ve been using Alias Sketchbook which is surprisingly reactive unlike some other programs. And its not vector so its more like painting in photoshop. Just recently I’ve hooked my laptop output up to my tv screen and held the tablet at more of an angle. At first I was straining my eyes looking at my monitor all the time but the tv is typically further from your eyes and for me seemed to simulate a distance more similar to that of a model in a figure drawing class. I have to admit that this image was not drawn in the traditional way either. I brought up the jpg and drew over it. So I can’t take credit for things being in proportion. Although I’ve been reading a book which focuses on the balance and force in a pose and I was really trying to work on that aspect. I figured it was a good way to just focus on that one thing while not having to worry about the other aspects of drawing for right now.
